Places to visit in MurciaIf you can tear yourself away from the golf courses, or from your sunbed, then La Manga Club makes an ideal base for exploring the Murcia region, and also discovering the delights of the Costa Blanca and beyond. We’ve picked out a few highlights from both regions and have tried to give you some ideas for day trips.
Terra NaturaTerra Natura is a new-generation wildlife park where you can discover the “Zooimmersion” experience – a new concept in habitat design which will enable you to come into contact with the animals as if there were no barriers between you – at least, no visible ones! The 320,000 square metres of the Benidorm park are divided into four themed areas: Pangea, America, Asia and Europe. CartagenaA trip to Cartagena is not complete without a stroll through the shopping area. A good starting point could be the newly rebuilt port, with its magnificent ancient wall and new marina and bars. Past the former town hall building (now under repairs) is the Calle Mayor, the main street of the old quarter. Lined by traditional shops and restaurants, here you can get an ice cream and stroll down to the port, sit down and quietly watch the world go by, or follow the flow towards its heart and the numerous shops it shelters, from traditional instruments or sailing equipment to Mango, Zara, Pull and Bear, Springfield, Benetton, Massimo Dutti… Cabo de Palos Cabo de Palos is a small fishing village approximately 10 minutes drive away and a favourite retreat of visitors to La Manga Club featuring a huge lighthouse overlooking the Mediterranean. Sundays are a good day to go, there is a large market in the morning (9.00 - 20.00pm) just a few minutes walk to the seafornt and there are numerous harbour front restuarants where you can sit in the sun and watch the world go by. There are also two large ceramic shops which are well worth a visit. To get to Cabo leave La Manga Clup, follow the sings for La Manga. When you get to the first roundabout take the first exit (right) and go up onto the dual carriageway, drive for about 4 to 5 minutes and you will see a sign for Cabo de Palos, take this exit, go past supermarket UPPER and this road takes you into Cabo, to get to the Harbour go right at the traffic lights. La Manga del Mar Menor The Mar Menor or little sea is the inland sea seperated from the Mediterranean by La Manga del Mar Menor or La Manga Strip. The La Manga Peninsular is over 28 kms long and stretches from the fishing village of Cabo de Palos to the salt flats of San Pedro del Pinatar. Only one road take you along the STRIP which although very busy in July and August can seem almost deserted outside these times. Both sides of La Manga Strip have something to offer. The Mediterranean side with its magnificent sandy beaches and the Mar Menor with its warm shallow waters, that are ideal for children and for enjoying your favourite water sports. During the summer months you´ll find various different water sports available at many different locations along the strip including waterskiing, jet biking, sailing and pedalos. For the youngsters try Peke Park which you will find down opposite Plaza Bohemia on La Manga Strip. Open only during the evening, this is an open-air amusment park with rides and fairground games. It works on a card system which you buy at the kiosk that entitles you to go on the rides until your credit runs out on the card.
MurciaThe region’s capital, Murcia, is one of the most important and fastest growing cities in spain and has much to see and do. The city has a long history dating back to 831ad and flourished under the rule of its arab founders. The city really began to grow in the 16th century when it became of a centre of baroque architecture. Many fine churches, and the impressive cathedral with its 92 metre tower were built in this period, leaving the city with a splendid architectural heritage that draws visitors to this day. The city experienced a further building boom in the 19th century, a period which saw such distinctive buildings as the romea theatre, the town hall and the casino being built. The city has good shopping and a wide selection of museums, restaurants and bars.
Aqualandia Benidorm
Although the strong emotions are always a guarantee in Aqualandia also the less daring can enjoy attractions relax, to share with family or a group of friends. A stop at the Grand Jacuzzi near the Niagara assures us a moment of relaxation to take forces and continue to enjoy everything that gives us the park. Rapid, Atlantic Surf, and so on.
Mundomar Animal Park
Mundomar is a theme park inhabited by aquatic animals such as dolphins, penguins and sea lions as well as tropical birds. As much as possible each species lives within an area closely resembling its natural habitat. A great day out for the children. The dolphin show is the highlight of the day which takes place at 1.30pm and 4.30pm. It's great to watch the show from one of the underwater viewing points which provides a unique sight of these loveable creatures in action. Try to get your child selected to go in the boat that the dolphin pulls. The sea lions and the seals also put on a humouous show that the kids love. And the parrots on rollerskates provide no end of entertainment though the person conducting the show is speaking Spanish so you won't understand everything that's going on. Away from the birds and animals there's a children's park with plenty slides and other amusements and a selection of cafés and restaurants should provide a welcome break to the adult contingent. Archena and Fortuna Leana SpasTwo of the Murcia region’s best kept secrets are the natural spas located at Archena and Fortuna. Mineral rich waters flow from underground springs and are said to have curative powers for a variety of ailments, including arthritic disorders and rheumatic illnesses. The thermal springs at Archena were first discovered more than 2000 years ago by the romans, and have drawn people seeking rest, recuperation or cures for a variety of illnesses for centuries.
BenidormYou either love it, or hate it, but there is no denying that Benidorm has a certain amount of charm. Big, brash and completely over the top, there is plenty to do in the resort. Mundomar Marine and Exotic Animal Park is well worth visiting. It includes sea lions, turtles and flamingos amongst its attractions and is likely to appeal to kids of all ages.
Terra MiticaTerra Mitica is a wonderful collection of themed areas that offer an exciting day out for both adults and children alike. The five areas based on ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia and “the islands” take elements of all those areas and bring them together in an innovative and interesting way. Located close to Benidorm, it is easily reached from la manga club, and has lots of themed attractions and shows.
